Online care: questions before booking

A platform listing, marketing claim, or video call option does not by itself verify licensure, BPD experience, suitability, or crisis coverage.

Bring useful context

How to evaluate a support group
or online community

Peer support may reduce isolation and offer practical experience, but it is not the same as professional assessment, psychotherapy, or crisis care. Before joining, review how the group operates

Who operates and moderates the group, and are facilitators peers or licensed professionals?

Does it clearly explain what to do in a crisis and what moderators cannot provide?

Can posts, names, profiles, or attendance be visible to the public or other members?

Are there rules for harassment, self-harm content, diagnosis, medication advice, and commercial promotion?

Can members report unsafe behavior, block contact, remove content, or leave the group?
Are fees, sponsorships, affiliations, and use of member data clearly disclosed?

Books, manuals, and named services

A clinician training manual, consumer book, branded platform, hospital, or resource center serves a specific purpose. Check the publisher or organization directly for the intended audience, current edition, access terms, qualifications, and service area.

This site does not provide unauthorized manual downloads, reproduce proprietary treatment materials, rank named providers, or imply affiliation. A professional manual should not be treated as a free self-treatment replacement.

Self-help and DBT skills: useful boundaries

Self-help can support reflection, routines, communication, and skills practice. A workbook, app, video, or free skills group is not automatically a complete dialectical behavior therapy program or a substitute for professional treatment.

Consider professional help when experiences cause significant distress, interfere with daily life, involve repeated harmful behavior, or raise safety concerns. Do not start, stop, or change medication based on a website or community post.

Before you start

What are the best resources for someone with BPD?
Start with trusted organizations: NIMH and NAMI for clear information, the National Education Alliance for BPD for education and family programs, and a therapist trained in DBT for treatment. In a crisis, the 988 Lifeline is available 24/7 by call, text or chat.
The NAMI HelpLine (800-950-6264) and local NAMI groups support families, and the National Education Alliance for BPD runs programs for relatives. Many partners and family members also benefit from their own therapist.
Start with a primary care provider, who can refer you to a psychologist, psychiatrist or clinical social worker. You can also search SAMHSA’s treatment locator for services near you. Ask specifically about therapies built for BPD, such as DBT.
There’s no BPD-specific crisis line, but the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (call or text 988) and Crisis Text Line (text HOME to 741741) are free and available 24/7. For non-crisis information and support, the NAMI HelpLine is open weekdays, 10am–10pm ET, at 800-950-6264.

Looking for a MYBPD test or assessment?

The tool on this site is a custom educational reflection checklist, not a diagnosis or validated clinical screener. Use the symptoms guide to understand professional assessment, or use the checklist only to organize observations from the past three months.
