Call 911
If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
If you’re worried about someone else
- Ask Ask them directly how they’re doing, and whether they’re thinking about suicide. Asking won’t put the idea in their head.
- Be there Listen without judging, and take what they say seriously.
- Help keep them safe If you can do so safely, help put distance between them and anything they could use to hurt themselves.
- Help them connect Offer to call or text 988 with them. If they’re in immediate danger, call 911.
- Follow up Check in over the next few days. Staying in touch makes a real difference.
What happens when you reach out
A trained crisis counselor will listen, help you work through what you’re feeling, and talk with you about what might help next, including support near you. You don’t have to be thinking about suicide to reach out. You can contact 988 about any kind of emotional distress.
After a crisis
Once the immediate crisis has passed, ongoing support matters. A primary care provider or mental health professional can help you plan what comes next. NIMH explains how to find mental health help, and our guide covers how to get evaluated for BPD
MYBPD Test is an educational website. It is not a crisis service, and we can’t respond to messages in an emergency.
